South Carolina in news for its gambling laws
Published on Oct 13, 2009

It is being highlighted that the legality of gambling in South Carolina is back in spotlight.

According to a report filed by SC Now, several gamblers have been arrested following a series of raids across the state. For instance, in one of the raids, two people were arrested in Greenville County because of what deputies call an “illegal poker operation.”

Significantly, earlier this month, poker’s battle for legal recognition in the US received a boost after a South Carolina court again declared poker to be a game of skill, not a game of chance. Charges were dismissed against five men who were indicted after police raided a poker game in the south-eastern US state in April 2006.

More recently, a South Carolina priest has won at least $25,000 on a new poker game show. Andrew Trapp immediately donated all of his winnings to the St. Michael's Church in Garden City, SC, where he serves as associate pastor. His goal is to win the million dollar grand prize to help St. Michael's build a new church, which is currently $1.5 million  short of its goal. The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that Trapp earned a spot on the show by finishing in the top 10 in an online poker tournament that began with 10,000 contestants.
